Cambodia will nominate US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in halting the country’s recent border conflict with Thailand, its Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol announced on Friday.
Speaking to reporters in the capital, Chanthol credited Trump’s personal intervention for helping broker a ceasefire following five days of intense clashes that left at least 43 people dead and displaced over 300,000 people on both sides of the border.
"Yes," Chanthol confirmed via text message when asked about Cambodia’s plan to submit Trump's name for the prestigious international award, which recognises significant contributions to peace and cooperation among nations.
According to Reuters, a phone call by Trump last week played a decisive role in breaking the deadlock between Cambodia and Thailand, leading to a ceasefire deal negotiated in Malaysia on Monday. Following the truce, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt praised Trump’s involvement in a post on X, writing: "Give him the Nobel Peace Prize!"

Chanthol, who also serves as Cambodia’s top trade negotiator, said his country was not only grateful for Trump’s peacemaking efforts but also for the recent reduction in proposed US tariffs on Cambodian exports.
Washington had initially threatened a tariff rate of 49% on key Cambodian goods, later scaling it down to 36%, before eventually settling at 19%. “This move saved Cambodia’s garment and footwear industry from collapse,” Chanthol said.
Cambodia is the latest country to back Trump's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. In June, Pakistan announced its intention to recommend him for his efforts in easing tensions with India. Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said he had nominated Trump for the award.
