Authorities in Saudi Arabia have imposed a ban on feeding pigeons in the areas surrounding Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid al-Nabawi in Madinah as part of efforts to enhance cleanliness and safeguard public health, according to media reports.

Under the new policy, violators will face a fine of 1,000 Saudi Riyals, according to a statement from local authorities.

Officials said the decision aims to prevent the spread of diseases, reduce environmental pollution, and protect public property from damage caused by large flocks of pigeons. Feeding pigeons had been a common practice among pilgrims, particularly in areas popularly known as “Kabootar Chowk.”

To ensure compliance, monitoring teams have been deployed, and residents and visitors are being encouraged to report violations by submitting photos to relevant authorities.

The Ministry of Health and environmental departments stated that the measure is part of broader efforts to maintain hygiene standards and preserve the sanctity of the holy cities, which receive millions of pilgrims and visitors each year.
