Pakistan’s neutral-venue request for Asian Champions Trophy rejected

Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Men’s Asian Champions Trophy has been thrown into uncertainty after Hockey India turned down the Pakistan Hockey Federation’s request for a neutral venue, according to Indian media reports.

The PHF had asked the Asian Hockey Federation to consider moving the tournament outside India or arranging Pakistan’s matches at neutral venues. The federation cited the sensitive relations between the two countries and concerns over the safety of its players and officials.

Hockey India secretary general and Asian Hockey Federation vice-president Bhola Nath Singh said the tournament venues would remain unchanged. “There will be no change in venue. If Pakistan wants to play in the Asian Champions Trophy, it will have to come to India,” Singh said, according to Indian media reports.

He added that Bangladesh and Oman were reserve teams for the competition and could replace Pakistan if the national side decided against taking part.

The tournament is scheduled to be held from October 27 to November 5, with Jalandhar and Mohali hosting the matches. India, Pakistan, China, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea are due to compete in the event.

Jalandhar will host the league-stage games, while the semi-finals and final are scheduled for Mohali. Pakistan and India are due to meet in a league match in Jalandhar on November 1.

Despite the rejection of its request, the PHF has said it remains committed to taking part in the continental competition.
