Argentina players Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas Son Argentinas" ("The Falklands are Argentine") after their team's World Cup semifinal victory over England, prompting renewed attention to FIFA's rules prohibiting political messages during matches.

The banner, reportedly thrown onto the pitch by supporters after the final whistle, was held aloft by the two players during the on-field celebrations. The Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, remain a British Overseas Territory but are claimed by Argentina.

FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) prohibit players from displaying political, religious or personal slogans or images on equipment or clothing. Competition organisers may impose sanctions for violations under the governing body's regulations.

Ahead of the match, Argentine Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva said banners or flags carrying political or provocative messages would not be permitted inside the stadium. FIFA's Stadium Code of Conduct also bans political, offensive and discriminatory material at tournament venues.

The issue carries historical significance because Argentina and the United Kingdom fought a 74-day conflict over the Falkland Islands in 1982, resulting in more than 900 deaths.

The incident came amid heightened tensions surrounding the fixture and follows previous controversies involving Argentina's national team over conduct during post-match celebrations.
