Sindh to rein in 'misleading' social media content

KARACHI: Measures will be taken at the provincial level to address the issue of negative propaganda and misinformation being spread through social media, a provincial senior minister announced on Wednesday.

"The decision was made during the meeting of the Information Department, which was chaired by Sharjeel Inam Memon," a press release from the office of the senior minister stated.

Besides him, others who participated in the meeting included Secretary Information Kashif Gulzar Shaikh, DG Information Moez Pirzada, and other senior officers.

The participants deliberated over the strategies that should be adopted to deal with the misinformation campaign through social media.

"Efforts are being made through a well-coordinated campaign to spread misleading information against the country and its national interests," said Sharjeel Memon, adding that it became imperative to launch legal actions against such elements.

Sharjeel said the Sindh government is considering taking up steps including the creation of a provincial cell to address the cybercrime and misinformation.

Although he said freedom of speech was a constitutional right, yet it could not become a reason for spreading false and misleading propaganda against the country.
