SHC suspends provincial ombudsman’s order to remove K-Electric CEO

The Sindh High Court on Thursday suspended the provincial ombudsman’s decision to remove K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi from office over harassment allegations made by a former female colleague.

Moonis Alvi appeared in court alongside his counsel, Barrister Abid Zuberi. While granting interim relief, the court directed Alvi to deposit a fine of Rs2.5 million with the Sindh High Court.

The court also issued notices to the provincial ombudsman and the complainant, questioning the legal grounds for the ombudsman’s decision. 

Previously, the provincial ombudsman had ordered Alvi’s dismissal and imposed a fine of Rs2.5 million, stating that allegations of harassment made by a a former chief marketing and communication officer of the power company.

The ombudsman’s office accused Alvi of subjecting the complainant to harassment and mental torture, directing that the fine be paid within a month or else risk confiscation of his movable and immovable assets.

The ombudsperson found Alvi guilty of "committing harassment, creating hostile environment and caused mental agony at the workplace to the complainant and her team."

"Consequently, accused Moonis Abdullah Alvi is penalised under section 4(4)(ii)(c) of the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010 and is removed from his service instantly," the order issued by the ombudsperson reads.

In response, Alvi had approached the Sindh High Court to challenge the ombudsman’s verdict.

Following the ombusperson verdict, the KE CEO took to X and said, “I have always upheld the values of integrity and dignity in professional interactions, and I deeply believe in fostering safe and inclusive workplaces for all."

Moonis Alvi, who joined K-Electric in 2008, was recently reappointed as Chief Executive Officer by the company's board of directors.
