In a significant development, Karachi police have arrested one suspect allegedly involved in the killing of a young author, Laraib, sources within the department said on Thursday.

According to the well-placed sources, police have also recovered the mobile phone of the 22-year-old victim from the suspect.

However, the main suspect is still at large and police are conducting search operations to arrest the culprit.

On March 5, Laraib was shot dead by muggers for resisting a robbery bid in the Korangi area of Karachi.

The victim was going to the gym when two armed men arrived on a motorcycle, and one of them got off the two-wheeler.

Laraib's father, Muhammad Hussain, said that he was a student of BA final and was writing a book on basic principles of accounting.

As narrated by the victim's father, Laraib refused to give the mobile phone to the dacoits as the data for his upcoming book was saved in the gadget.

Upon showing some resistance, the dacoits killed Laraib and fled from the scene.

Hussain said that his son was set to get married next month in April.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice and directed the police to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.

Reacting to the incident, DIG East Capt (retd) Ghulam Azhar suspended the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Korangi Industrial area.

As Karachi remains mired in the daunting challenge of street crime, 35 people have been killed for resisting robbery in different areas of the metropolis in just two months of the year 2024.
