Karachi court awards compensation to victim 34 years after crippling injury in bus accident

Karachi: A resident who was left permanently disabled after being struck by a government bus in Karachi has finally received justice, with a district court awarding him Rs10 million in compensation more than three decades after the accident.

According to the plaintiff’s counsel, Faheem, the incident occurred in March 1992 when the plaintiff, then aged 27, was standing at a bus stop on Korangi Road. He said a KTC bus, whose driver had allegedly lost control of the vehicle, hit the plaintiff.

He further submitted that due to the negligence of the bus driver and his employer, the provincial government, the plaintiff sustained severe bodily injuries, including the traumatic amputation of his right leg.

The court directed the Sindh government and the bus driver to jointly pay Rs10 million in damages within three months.

In its judgment, the court stated that the evidence on record clearly showed the accident occurred due to the driver's negligence.

It further held that the Sindh government was also liable, as the vehicle involved was a government-owned bus.

The court noted that the victim lost a leg in the crash and suffered permanent disability. It added that the lifelong disability had severely affected both his earning capacity and his social life, justifying the compensation awarded.
