KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched preparations for the upcoming monsoon season by approving a large-scale cleaning and desilting campaign for major stormwater drains across the city to improve rainwater drainage and minimise the risk of urban flooding.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Mayor Murtaza Wahab, where officials reviewed development projects, municipal services and monsoon preparedness measures.
Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jafar informed the meeting that tenders for drain cleaning and desilting had already been issued, with bids scheduled to be opened on Monday. He said work would begin immediately after the completion of the procurement process.
Jafar said KMC has allocated Rs6 billion for the operation, aimed at ensuring drains are cleared before the start of heavy monsoon rains and protecting residents and infrastructure from flooding.
Mayor Wahab directed authorities to engage third-party consultants for transparent monitoring, quality control and timely completion of the project, emphasising strict oversight of the use of public funds.
According to district-wise allocations, District East received the highest share with Rs730 million, followed by District West and Keamari with Rs700 million each. Additional funds have also been earmarked for critical drainage points across the city requiring special attention.
