Netflix is developing a live-action television series based on popular video game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), with actor Donald Glover reportedly set to star in the project.
According to Variety, Glover’s brother, Stephen Glover, will write and executive produce the series. Donald Glover is known for his roles in Community and 30 Rock, as well as his 2016 satirical song ‘This Is America’.
The project raises questions about how the battle royale game, which has no conventional storyline, will be adapted for television.
Released in 2017, PUBG is an online multiplayer game in which 100 players are dropped into an arena and compete against one another. The last player remaining wins the match.
The game has a large following in Pakistan, where its violent gameplay and possible effects on its largely young audience have drawn scrutiny on several occasions.
PUBG was also in the news last month after Pakistan’s five-member national team won a bronze medal in e-sports at the Asian Games in Japan.
If developed, the series would join several other video game adaptations being planned by Netflix. These include a show based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise and a film inspired by Gears of War.
The streaming service is also reportedly developing animated series based on Minecraft and Clash of Clans. Its existing catalogue includes animated shows inspired by Cyberpunk and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.
