Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Khawaja Asif slammed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Ali Muhammad Khan after the latter interrupted the federal minister during his speech at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

On Monday night, several PTI leaders, including chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, MNAs Sher Afzal Marwat, Hamid Raza, Zain Qureshi and others were arrested outside the Parliament House.

The Islamabad police took them into custody for violating the newly passed public gathering law during the former ruling party’s Sunday power show in the federal capital.

In today's NA session, Ali Muhammad lashed out at the authorities for arresting his fellow leaders while addressing the lower house.

“Today, I am making a case on democracy. Last night, what happened to democracy and to this parliament? We are not in Israel, we are in Pakistan,” the PTI MNA said.

“While what happened on 9 May was wrong, what happened last night was 9 May for Pakistan’s democracy,” he added.

“This date (September 9) will be remembered in Pakistan’s history. It is filled with Liaquat Ali Khan, Bhutto’s execution, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s blood and gunshots at Imran Khan’s body.

“Last night, not from India, Israel or America but [people] from the institutions of my own country [made the arrests]. Who were […] those veiled people who entered [the Parliament] and took our people away?”

Following Khan's fiery speech, PML-N's Khawaja Asif justified the arrest of PTI leaders from the premises of the parliament house.

“If you say ‘No Khan, no Pakistan’, what will be the reaction [of the state]?” Asif said.

The minister further condemned “equating Pakistan’s existence to one man”, as well as the call to “bring an army of Pashtuns and attack Punjab”.

The defence minister claimed that the integrity of the country was challenged during PTI's Sangjani power show by using foul language against the army and women.

“Pakistan’s integrity, unity and Constitution’s status were challenged. What do you expect after that?”

He also alleged PTI of knocking on the doors of the establishment to hold talks with politicians.

“Which Constitution says that if a political person has a grievance, they will talk to the army?" Asif questioned.

“This is a defect in their political DNA. When you are launched through the army, you return to your origin.”

He continued to blast the PTI, saying that none of the party’s protests match democratic values.

During his speech, Ali Muhammad Khan interrupted Khawaja Asif alleging that the arrests of PTI leaders were made at the behest of the federal government.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also tried to calm down the PTI leader but his efforts went in vain.

In response, Asif said: "He [Mr Ali] is just doing drama. He lies to people after reciting Durood Sharif then he again recites Durood Sharif."

“Their conscience is dead. They have sold their conscience,” he added.

“He (Khan) was included when I was charged with Article 6; he voted in favour, everyone here is a witness. He is a liar. Now that I have stepped on his tail, he is shouting.”
