A family court in Peshawar sentenced a man to three months in jail, imposing a fine of Rs5,000 on Saturday for solemnising a second marriage without the consent of his first wife.

“Sajjad Khan accused is held guilty and convicted for the offence under section 6(5) of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961”, Judge Ghulam Hamid said in his order.

The petitioner, whose identity remains undisclosed, said that Khan contracted a second marriage without obtaining her consent thereby, violating the provisions outlined in the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961.

"In case of non-payment of fine, the accused will have to undergo another 15 days of imprisonment," the judge maintained.

Following the verdict, Khan was arrested from the courtroom and was transferred to Central Jail in the provincial capital.
