Polling is underway for the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections across 13 constituencies of Mirpur division, with authorities implementing extensive security measures to ensure a peaceful process.

Voting began at 8:00am and will continue until 5:00pm. A public holiday has been declared in the districts of Bhimber, Mirpur, and Kotli to facilitate voters.

According to election authorities, 288 candidates are contesting in this phase, with polling being conducted at 2,316 polling stations, including 1,241 highly sensitive and 724 sensitive stations.

Security arrangements include monitoring through multiple zones and sectors, with thousands of personnel from police and other law enforcement agencies deployed under a three-tier security plan.

The Pakistan Rangers, Federal Constabulary, and Pakistan Army are assisting police to maintain law and order.

The elections are being held in three phases due to security concerns, with the remaining phases scheduled for August 2 and August 10.

Meanwhile, political tensions increased as parties exchanged allegations of irregularities during polling. The PML-N alleged rigging in Kotli’s LA-10 constituency, while the PPP accused opponents of attempting to influence the voting process.

The AJK Election Commission has urged voters to participate peacefully and warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt the electoral process.
