Hospitals across Karachi are reporting a sharp rise in flu-like illnesses as winter approaches, with doctors warning that cases could increase further and urging residents to take precautions.
Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) has recorded around 400 influenza cases this year, while Civil Hospital Karachi is receiving 70 to 80 patients with flu-like symptoms daily, according to hospital officials cited in media reports.
Professor Faisal Mahmood, head of AKUH’s infectious diseases section, said the H1N1 strain of influenza was circulating in the city. He cautioned that confirmed figures might underestimate the actual burden, as testing was generally conducted on patients with more severe symptoms.
Influenza can cause serious complications, including pneumonia, particularly among vulnerable groups.
Experts have also highlighted vaccination as an important preventive measure, particularly for older adults and people with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems.
