Dr Summaiya submits documents as commission examines proposed medical board in Mir Raza case

KARACHI: Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya formally submitted documents before the Judicial Commission, probing Mir Raza Ali's death.

The judicial commission continued its hearing into the case.

Dr Summaiya appeared before the Judicial Commission in her personal capacity and submitted a formal written application.

The commission told Dr Summaiya that she had already shown considerable courage in the matter and acknowledged that she could face criticism. The commission said it would review her application and issue appropriate orders.

During the proceedings, lawyer Jibran Nasir said DIG Aamir Farooqi was seeking the formation of a new super medical board.

He said Dr Osama’s statement had once again been recorded and questioned whether the proposed board had been constituted in light of the new statement.

Nasir said the police had proposed forming another super medical board, but argued that no new medical board could be established at an individual’s personal request or discretion. He maintained that such an action would amount to a clear violation of the terms of reference (ToRs) set by the commission.

Nasir said the affected family's fundamental questions had still not been answered. He said the original medical board had been constituted in accordance with court orders and questioned whether a new super medical board could legally supersede those judicial directions.

The commission also questioned why the parties had not been informed if police had recorded another statement from Dr Osama.

Justice Umar Sial issued a strong warning to the Sindh government’s focal person over what he described as negligence during the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Mir Raza has written a letter seeking an extension of the Judicial Commission’s tenure until October 15.
