Three years after the October 7, 2023 attacks and the war that followed in Gaza, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has undergone significant political and diplomatic shifts, with its impact extending well beyond the Middle East.

The conflict has moved from an issue that was often managed through diplomacy and periodic negotiations to a major international political and humanitarian crisis. The scale of destruction in Gaza, civilian casualties, displacement and restrictions on humanitarian assistance have generated growing international scrutiny of Israel’s genocide.

Before October 7, Israel maintained substantial diplomatic and political support, particularly among Western countries. The Gaza war, however, has intensified international criticism of Israel’s military conduct.

Concerns over civilian deaths, destruction of infrastructure, displacement and humanitarian conditions in Gaza have become central to international discussions surrounding the conflict.

The Palestinian issue, which had at times receded from the center of international diplomacy, has regained global attention since the outbreak of the Gaza war.

The conflict has also renewed discussions over Palestinian statehood. A growing number of countries have moved toward recognizing Palestine, while the question of an independent Palestinian state has become increasingly prominent in international diplomatic discussions.

The war has also influenced public opinion, particularly among younger generations. Images and videos from Gaza have been widely shared through social media, allowing millions of people to follow the destruction and humanitarian crisis in real time.

As a result, the Palestinian issue has increasingly been discussed not only as a geopolitical conflict but also through the lens of human rights and international humanitarian law.

The Gaza war has also affected relations between Israel and countries across the Arab world. The conflict disrupted the momentum behind normalization efforts that had gained ground in the years preceding October 7.

While Arab governments have largely maintained diplomatic and strategic relations with Western powers and have not uniformly severed relations with Israel, public criticism of Israel has intensified across much of the Arab and Muslim world.

The conflict has also highlighted the varying diplomatic roles of regional powers, including Türkiye, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Iran, each of which has approached the crisis from different political and strategic perspectives.

Despite the significant political and diplomatic changes of the past three years, the fundamental Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains unresolved.

The Gaza war has altered international attitudes, revived debate over Palestinian statehood and placed the conflict at the center of global diplomacy. However, a lasting political settlement addressing the competing national aspirations and security concerns of Israelis and Palestinians remains elusive.
