Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his recent departure from Portugal’s national team camp, detailing a series of conversations with head coach Roberto Martínez and officials that he says ultimately led to a breakdown in trust.

In a lengthy statement posted on Instagram, Ronaldo said he had initially planned to leave international football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup but reconsidered after the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president asked him to continue representing the national team.

Ronaldo said he was also consulted about the appointment of the current head coach and told the federation president that he believed the coach was “the right choice”.

According to Ronaldo, he later met the coach before the latest international camp and was presented with a plan under which he would play the opening and final matches, while being rested for some of the team's other fixtures.

The plan initially included Ronaldo staying in Portugal instead of travelling with the squad for matches in Norway and Denmark. Ronaldo said he rejected the proposal because, as captain, he did not believe it would set the right example.

He said the coach eventually agreed with his position.

Ronaldo claimed that another meeting took place at his home in Lisbon before the camp, during which the arrangements previously discussed remained unchanged.

He then played against the first opponent and accepted being substituted, saying he even handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes himself.

However, Ronaldo said the situation changed before Portugal’s match in Norway, when an assistant informed him that the coach wanted him to be prepared to play around 30 minutes.

Although the request differed from his original fitness plan, Ronaldo said he agreed. He claimed that after later discussions, the coach acknowledged that it had been a mistake to have him warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch.

Ronaldo said the coach told him: “I made a mistake in having someone of the stature of Pelé or Maradona warm up and then not putting him in the game.”

According to Ronaldo, the coach also assured him that he wanted him to remain part of the national team, saying: “I want Cristiano in the National Team. In fact, I don't want him a little, I want him a lot.”

Ronaldo said the coach’s subsequent public comments, however, were markedly different from their private conversation. He described the tone of the press conference as unexpectedly aggressive and said it contributed to his decision to leave the camp.

“I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further broken promise,” Ronaldo said, stressing that honesty and keeping one's word were fundamental to him.

The Portugal captain also rejected any suggestion that he had interfered in tactical or technical decisions, saying that in nearly 25 years with the national team, he had never attempted to influence a coach’s decisions.“I respect the decision, and when they break their word to me, I feel that my place is not there,” he said.

Ronaldo nevertheless accepted responsibility for leaving the camp and apologised to his teammates and the Portuguese public.

He said the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him for his actions, adding that his status as captain should be considered an aggravating factor.

The 41-year-old also addressed speculation about a farewell match, saying he expected to have one or more farewell games eventually but insisted that his priority remained competing for Portugal rather than receiving a ceremonial send-off.

Ronaldo recalled that he had previously remained with the national team after learning of his father’s death because he wanted to represent Portugal in the following match.

He concluded by saying that, provided he remains physically fit and continues performing for his club after serving any suspension imposed on him, he would remain available for international duty.

“If I am physically well, playing for my club, hopefully with goals, after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our National Team,” Ronaldo said.

He described his account as "the purest of truths.”
