A US military contractor and former Green Beret, Anthony Aguilar shared a harrowing account from Gaza, where a starving Palestinian child was killed by occupation forces shortly after receiving humanitarian aid.

Aguilar, who worked with the US-Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Aid Foundation (GHF), shared the incident in an interview. He recounted meeting a young boy named Amir at an aid distribution point on May 28.

“At secure distribution site #2, this young boy, Amir, walked up to me, barefoot and wearing tattered clothes that hung off his emaciated body,” Aguilar recalled. “He kissed my hand and thanked us — all he had was half a bag of rice and lentils.”

According to Aguilar, Amir had walked 12 kilometers just to reach the aid site. “He laid the small portion of food down, and with his frail, skeletal hands, thanked us for what little he received.”

Tragically, moments after receiving the aid, Amir reportedly came under attack. “As he returned to the group, Israeli forces began firing tear gas, stun grenades, and live bullets into the crowd,” Aguilar said. “Amir was among those who were shot. He ran, but they kept firing, and he didn’t make it.”

The Gaza Humanitarian Aid Foundation has come under scrutiny by humanitarian organisations, including the United Nations, over allegations that aid distributions are being used to mask violent operations.

Critics have accused Israeli and US contractors of turning aid efforts into grounds for “mass executions.”

Aguilar’s account adds to growing calls for international investigations into aid practices in Gaza amid worsening humanitarian conditions and increasing reports of civilian casualties.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global hunger assessment body, has raised alarms that a famine is now materialising in Gaza as Israel continues its siege of the Palestinian enclave and blocks humanitarian aid.

"Famine thresholds have been reached for food consumption in most of the Gaza Strip and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City," the IPC warned.

Israel has killed more than 1,000 Palestinians who gathered to collect food and essential supplies. More than 60,000 civilians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
