Two men arrested in Azeri woman's gang-rape case handed over to police on 6-day remand

A judicial magistrate in Lahore on Tuesday handed police six-day physical remand of two men arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of an Azerbaijani woman.

The suspects were presented before Magistrate Azhar Mahmood at the Cantonment Courts after their arrests in the case. The police requested 14 days of physical custody to question the suspects, collect evidence and conduct DNA tests. The court, however, approved a six-day remand.

The police said that a third suspect has also been identified and teams are conducting raids to arrest him, according to the police.

The case concerns a 20-year-old Azerbaijani national who had come to Pakistan for business. She has alleged that three men sexually assaulted her at a rented apartment in a private housing society near Raiwind during the night between Friday and Saturday.

One of the suspects was arrested on Monday, while police confirmed the arrest of the second man on Tuesday.

The remand hearing took place a day after the woman recorded her statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Sagheer.

Police Sub-Inspector Faryal Malik, the investigating officer, presented the woman before the magistrate under tight security arrangements.
