The United States on Friday accused Iran of attempting to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico, stating that such an incident could extend the tensions between the two countries beyond the Middle East.
A US official revealed that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force had allegedly launched the assassination plot late last year, which was successfully disrupted earlier this year.
“The plot has been contained and poses no ongoing threat,” the official stated, though no additional details or evidence were shared regarding how the plan was foiled. The Iranian mission to the United Nations has declined to comment on the matter.
The alleged plan reportedly came in response to Israel’s April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus, which killed several senior members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Since then, Israel has conducted a far wider air campaign inside Iran, resulting in over 1,000 casualties, with the US also participating by targeting Iran’s key nuclear sites.
Iran, meanwhile, continues to be a major backer of Hamas, the resistance fighters' group governing the Gaza Strip since its 2007 election victory.
