The US has cancelled more than 100,000 visas, including nearly 8,000 students, as part of a major immigration crackdown, according to the US Department of State.

In a statement, the US Department of State reported that the visa cancellations took place during the first year of President Trump’s term. The cancelled visas included the B1/B2 visa type issued for business and tourism, particularly for individuals who stayed in the country beyond the permitted duration of stay.

According to officials, the crackdown also affected around 2,500 people who came to the US for employment purposes. A majority of those whose visas were cancelled had criminal records and proof of legal violations.

According to the Department of State, visas were cancelled on reasons including driving under the influence of alcohol, violence in public, theft, child abuse, drug trafficking and money-related corruption. Authorities have stated that these measures were mainly taken for public safety.

The deportations and visa cancellations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to keep the US secure and ensure compliance with immigration laws.

Trump’s administration, since the beginning, had a strict stance on immigration enforcement, which is now being actively acted upon.
