India has agreed to participate in the 2027 South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Pakistan, reports said on Monday, citing Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Secretary General Khalid Mehmood.

The event is scheduled to take place from April 4 to 11, with Pakistan preparing to welcome athletes from across South Asia.

Mehmood said that Indian representatives attended a meeting of the South Asian Olympic Association and accepted the invitation to compete in the Games. He said India had given its approval in principle, while details about its participating squad are expected to be shared in January next year.

Pakistan is preparing to host competitions in 28 sports across Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar.

Islamabad is set to stage the largest number of events, with 15 sports on the programme, including squash, tennis and martial arts. Lahore will host 10 sports, including cricket, hockey and swimming, while three sports will be held in Peshawar.

The government is also working on arrangements for the expected influx of athletes, officials and spectators.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar recently chaired a meeting to assess preparations. Officials discussed venue readiness as well as accommodation, transport, medical services and security.

Security is expected to receive particular attention because the event will bring foreign athletes, coaches, officials and media workers to Pakistan. Provincial authorities have been asked to ensure the safety of visiting delegations throughout their stay.

The POA is coordinating with participating countries and regional sports organisations as preparations continue.

The Games will also mark Pakistan’s return as host after a gap of more than two decades. The country last staged the SAF Games in Islamabad in 2004.
