UN chief urges world leaders to curb AI risks and end ongoing wars

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres used his final address to the General Assembly on Tuesday to urge world leaders to regulate artificial intelligence, end conflicts, address climate change and reform international institutions. His second five-year term ends on December 31.

Guterres called for stronger global oversight of AI risks, urging countries developing the technology to share information, cooperate on safety testing and establish common safeguards.

He also backed a multilateral framework for managing AI risks with independent oversight.

Addressing ongoing conflicts, Guterres called for an end to fighting, increased humanitarian aid and respect for international law. He also reiterated his support for a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians and urged greater action on climate change.

Guterres warned that international institutions are under increasing pressure and said existing mechanisms for collective action no longer fully reflect today’s global realities.

He called for reforms to make the UN system more effective in addressing emerging challenges.

As he prepares to leave office, Guterres said he would continue advocating for peace, the UN Charter and the principles of the United Nations after completing his decade-long tenure.
