At least seven people were killed and 122 injured after two trains collided near Gerza village in Egypt’s Giza Governorate on Sunday, according to local media.

The crash occurred near Gerza village in the Al Ayat area, where four carriages reportedly went off the tracks. Police have been directed to investigate the incident, including by questioning witnesses and passengers who were injured.

The Ministry of Health deployed 50 ambulances to the scene, increasing its initial response of 20 vehicles as the extent of the accident emerged. Civil defence teams and security personnel also took part in the emergency operation.

The injured were shifted to hospitals in neighbouring Beni Suef Governorate, while hospitals in Giza were put on alert to receive casualties. Railway recovery cranes were sent to remove the derailed carriages and restore access to the affected tracks.

Authorities continued to assess the situation and deal with the aftermath of the crash.
