Inspector shot dead, wife injured in armed attack in Karachi's Steel Town

A police inspector was shot dead and his wife injured when two armed assailants opened fire on them in the Steel Town area on Sunday, police said.

The victim was identified as Inspector Javed Abro. Police said that he had survived several previous assassination attempts. His brother had also been murdered in the past.

The injured woman and the police officer were shifted to hospital.

Speaking at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi police chief Azad Khan described the incident as tragic and said the attack took place outside the officer’s home.

He said the inspector and his wife were sitting outside their house and having tea when one of two men opened fire. The wife had provided a description of the suspected shooter, he added. However, the police chief said it was too early to determine the motive behind the attack.

Police and Counter-Terrorism Department teams are investigating the case from all angles, he said, adding that the officer had not informed them of any threats to his life.

The slain inspector’s brother said his family was ready to sacrifice their lives for their homeland.

“Two of my brothers have been martyred. I will not back down either,” he said, adding that operations against criminals would continue.
