A series of powerful earthquakes has struck Venezuela, causing widespread destruction and raising concerns over a potentially significant loss of life.

According to reports citing the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake measuring 7.1 in magnitude was followed within minutes by a second, stronger tremor measuring 7.5.

The earthquakes reportedly occurred at approximately 6:00 pm local time, causing severe shaking across affected areas.

Initial reports indicate that dozens of buildings were damaged or destroyed in several cities, including the capital, Caracas. Authorities fear that a large number of people may be trapped beneath collapsed structures as search and rescue operations continue.

Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, described the incident as a national tragedy, stating that multiple buildings had suffered extensive damage. She further reported significant damage to Caracas’ main Maiquetía International Airport.

According to official figures released so far, at least 167 people have been confirmed dead and more than 970 others injured.

Following the declaration of a state of emergency, the government has launched large-scale rescue and relief operations across the affected regions.

Separately, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake was reported in northern California, prompting authorities to issue alerts to approximately one million residents as a precautionary measure.

The USGS has reportedly warned that, depending on the extent of the damage and population exposure, the eventual death toll in Venezuela could rise significantly. Emergency response teams continue to assess the full scale of the disaster.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that the initial reports from Venezuela were deeply concerning and indicated that US agencies had been instructed to provide immediate assistance where possible.
