The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has introduced a new chipless, QR code-based Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC).

According to a statement, the new card replaces the imported microchip with a secure QR code, which can be read and verified on a smartphone through the PakID mobile app. The QR code contains relevant identity information and the cardholder’s photograph, making data entry easier and reducing errors, it said.

Nadra said that the government approved the new card on February 23, 2026, adding that it will display the family number and symbols for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, organ donors and citizens of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The name and address will appear in Urdu and English.

The chip-based Smart National Identity Card was introduced about 14 years ago, but its chip-enabled functions could not be used as intended due to the lack of chip readers and supporting infrastructure. The QR code-based card enables verification through an ordinary smartphone.

The new card is being introduced in phases from August 14, 2026. In the first phase, the QR code-based polycarbonate card will replace the standard chipless National Identity Card made of Teslin material. From January 2027, all categories, including NICOP and Juvenile Cards, will transition to the new card.

In the final phase, the POC will also transition to the new card. All identity cards already issued will remain valid until their respective expiry dates.

The new system marks an important step towards self-reliance, secure digital verification and easier identity authentication.
