China will launch a new “K” visa category to attract young professionals in science and technology field.
Compared to the existing 12 ordinary visa types, the K visa, which is to be launched from October 1, will provide more convenience to holders in terms of multiple entries, longer validity, and extended stays, according to officials.
Holders will be able to participate in academic, cultural, and scientific exchanges, as well as entrepreneurial and business activities, without the need for an invitation from a domestic employer or entity.
Applicants must meet certain age, education, and work experience criteria, but the process is expected to be more streamlined.

Announcing the decision, officials said the move is part of China’s broader talent development strategy and is intended to enhance international cooperation among young science and technology experts.
“China’s development requires the participation of talent from around the world, and it also provides opportunities for them,” said a press release.
The policy comes as Beijing continues easing visa regulations to boost global engagement. By the end of July, China had unilateral or reciprocal visa-exemption arrangements with 75 countries.
According to the National Immigration Administration, the first half of 2025 saw 38.05 million cross-border trips by foreign nationals, up 30.2% year on year, with visa-free entries accounting for 13.64 million, a 53.9% surge from the same period last year.
