Bondi Beach hero recovering at hospital as donations surge past A$1.1m

Donations raised for a Sydney fruit and vegetable seller, who wrestled a gun from one of the attackers during the Bondi Beach shooting, have crossed A$1.1 million as he recovers in hospital.

Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, was injured during the shooting and has undergone surgery. Police and witnesses said that he ran towards one of the gunmen from behind, took the rifle from him and brought him to the ground after taking cover behind parked cars.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Ahmed’s actions helped save lives. He told local media that while the attack showed the worst side of humanity, Ahmed’s response showed the best.

Albanese said Ahmed was shot by another attacker during the incident.

Ahmed’s family said he was hit in the arm and hand. His father, Mohamed Fateh al Ahmed, said that his son is an Australian citizen who sells fruits and vegetables. He said Ahmed had previously served in the police and has always been committed to protecting others.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said he visited Ahmed at St George Hospital. In a social media post, Minns thanked him and said people in the state were grateful for what he did.
