The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reacted to Pakistan’s decision not to play against India in the T20 World Cup.

In a statement, the ICC said it had taken note of the announcement by the Government of Pakistan regarding instructions issued to the national team about participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The ICC said it is awaiting a formal decision from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). However, it added that such a stance does not align with the fundamental concept of a global sporting event, where all qualified teams are expected to compete on an equal basis according to the tournament schedule.

The statement said ICC tournaments are founded on the principles of sporting integrity, competition, continuity and fairness.

While the ICC respects the role of governments in matters of national policy, it noted that the decision is not in the interests of international cricket or cricket fans worldwide, including millions of supporters in Pakistan.

The ICC expressed hope that the PCB would seriously consider the significant and long-term implications of the decision, as it could have negative consequences for the global cricket system, of which the PCB is both a member and a beneficiary.

According to the ICC, its top priority is the successful staging of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a responsibility shared by all member boards, including the PCB.

The ICC said it expects the PCB to work towards a mutually acceptable solution that safeguards the interests of all stakeholders.

It may be recalled that Pakistan has announced it will take part in the T20 World Cup but will not play against India.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, during which a key decision regarding World Cup participation was taken.

Following the meeting, the Government of Pakistan confirmed that while Pakistan will compete in the T20 Cricket World Cup, it will not play the match against India, which is scheduled for 15 February.
