Karachi police bust ice supply network, arrest two including woman

Karachi police on Friday busted an international drug network by arresting its two members, including a woman, and recovering nearly 20kg of ice, also known as methamphetamine.

DIG East Dr Farrukh Ali said that Landhi police arrested the suspects after receiving information about the alleged narcotics operation. The police recovered 19.56kg of methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth or ice, from their possession, he added.

He said that the suspects had links with an Afghan drug dealer identified as Sabir Afghan. He said the network was allegedly involved in moving drugs from Afghanistan into Pakistan before distributing them in different cities.

Dr Farrukh said the narcotics were brought into Pakistan through various routes and transported to Lahore and other parts of Punjab. From there, the drugs were allegedly supplied to Karachi and other areas of the country.

He described the operation as a family-run network and identified a Lahore-based woman, Mehwish, as its alleged main operator. He said she was involved in obtaining high-quality meth from Afghanistan and arranging its distribution across Pakistan.

The arrested woman was allegedly Mehwish’s sister-in-law, he said, adding that the woman’s husband supplied the ice, while the wife distributed it to customers. He said the alleged cartel comprised people from working- and middle-class backgrounds and added that another member had recently been arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Force.

The police official said investigators are questioning the two suspects to identify other members of the network and trace their alleged accomplices.

The DIG jokingly described the alleged cartel as “Pinky Two”, drawing a comparison with alleged drug queenpin Anmol, alias Pinky, who is currently facing trial in Karachi.
