WhatsApp users urged to link accounts with registered SIMs

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised WhatsApp users to make sure their accounts are connected to properly registered SIM cards to safeguard their chats, contacts and other digital information.

The telecom regulator warned that using a blocked or unregistered SIM could expose WhatsApp accounts and the digital information linked to them to potential risks.

Users have been asked to check whether their SIM is correctly registered and associated with their WhatsApp account. Those who need verification can visit the nearest franchise or customer service centre for biometric and SIM checks.

“Do not wait. Secure your WhatsApp and protect your digital identity,” the PTA said.

The authority also encouraged users to follow its official social media accounts for updates and advice on digital security.

It urged citizens requiring further assistance to use its digital support service and take necessary measures to secure their digital identities.

The PTA stressed that biometric and SIM verification were important safeguards for WhatsApp accounts, contacts and other digital information. It said a mobile number was more than just a communication tool as it was also linked to a person’s digital identity.
