Millions of cases of WhatsApp account hacking have been reported worldwide, prompting renewed concern over user security, including in Pakistan where the messaging application has a large user base.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued safety guidelines and recovery instructions for users whose WhatsApp accounts may be compromised. According to the authority, users should immediately delete the application and reinstall it if their account is hacked, followed by re-registering their mobile number.
PTA said that the verification code sent to the registered mobile number allows users to regain access to their accounts. The authority added that enabling the two-step verification feature can help prevent unauthorised access in the future.
The regulator also advised users to avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading unknown files. It recommended changing mobile phone and application passwords regularly, running antivirus scans, and monitoring accounts for unusual activity.
In case of continued issues or suspected hacking attempts, users have been advised to contact WhatsApp support without delay.
PTA said that by following basic precautionary measures, users can not only recover hacked accounts but also better protect their personal data and privacy from cyber threats.
