Meta has announced it will shut down Facebook Messenger’s desktop applications for Windows and Mac starting December 15, 2025, according to a report by CNET.
Beginning December 16, users will have to access Messenger through Facebook.com or Messenger.com to continue chatting on their computers. The company will send in-app notifications to users as part of the shutdown process.
Messenger users will have a 60-day transition period to continue using the desktop app before it becomes permanently unavailable. After that, users “will be blocked from using the Mac Messenger app,” as stated on the platform’s help page.
Meta has urged users to enable secure storage in Messenger to preserve their chat history. Those who haven’t done so are advised to set up a PIN from their desktop app to ensure messages are saved. Once secure storage is enabled, chat history will remain accessible across all platforms.
Users who use Messenger without a Facebook account will still be able to log in through Messenger.com.
Messenger was originally separated from the main Facebook platform in 2014, as Meta aimed to develop it into an independent messaging service. The company later explored integrating Messenger and Instagram Direct, but the project was shelved in 2023.
