The Sindh High Court on Wednesday acquitted MQM worker Ubaid K2 in the Rangers official’s murder case. Ubaid K2 was accused of opening fire on Rangers personnel in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area 27 years ago.
He was arrested in 2015, but this particular case was added to his record in 2021.
According to the charges, the accused, along with his associates, had planned a targeted killing operation against Rangers officials in Liaquatabad in 1998. During the attack, soldier Dildar Hussain was martyred, while Havaldar Mumtaz Ali was injured.
The prosecutor contended that the accused had confessed to the crime and that the ATC had handed down the sentence in accordance with the law.
“The accused did not deserve to be acquitted,” the prosecutor maintained.
Announcing the verdict on the petition, the court overturned the decision of the trial court.
The petitioner’s counsel, Advocate Raj Ali Wahid Kunwar, argued that the case had already undergone two previous trials, including one in a military court.
Some individuals, including Junid and Nader Shah, were convicted, while others were acquitted. All those arrested from the MQM headquarters “Nine-Zero” have since been released from jail, except Ubaid K2.
