The opposition alliance, Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Ayeen Pakistan (Movement for the Protection of Pakistan’s Constitution), has announced a nationwide protest campaign against the 27th Constitutional Amendment, vowing to disrupt parliamentary proceedings.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Sunday, the alliance’s chairman, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, declared that the movement would begin immediately and said parliament would not be allowed to function. “The campaign starts today,” he announced, adding that the slogan for the day would be ‘We reject such a constitution’.
During the joint press conference, former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar criticised the amendment, saying it was introduced to serve individual interests rather than the constitution itself. “The 27th Amendment was drafted to protect specific personalities. The constitution does not belong to individuals; it is being altered for the benefit of the elite,” he said.
Senator Raja Nasir Abbas echoed similar concerns, claiming that both parliament and the judiciary had been weakened. “They are leading the country towards destruction. We will go to any extent to stop this amendment,” he said.
