An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Tuesday granted permission to Farhan Ghani — younger brother of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani — to travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah.
He along with his associates was booked in a case involving alleged threats and assault on a government official.
Farhan Ghani, who serves as the chairman of Chanesar Town, appeared before the court along with other co-accused. The case revolves around charges filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), which drew sharp remarks from the bench during the hearing.
“If the ATA didn’t apply, why was it invoked to begin with?” the judge questioned. “The matter should have been directly referred to a magistrate if terrorism provisions were not relevant.”
In response, the defence counsel urged the court to formally instruct the transfer of the case to a magistrate. The court, however, reserved its order, saying a decision would be taken in line with legal procedures.
During the proceedings, the defence informed the court of Ghani’s plans to travel for Umrah. Responding to the judge’s query, Ghani confirmed that his departure was scheduled for the following morning and that he intended to return by September 19.
The court initially suggested a hearing date of September 20. However, upon Ghani’s request, the next hearing was deferred to September 22.
A verbal plea by the defence seeking exemption for Ghani from appearing at the next hearing was denied. The court maintained that any decision would be based on the police reports expected at the upcoming hearing.
