JI to set up protest camps at more than 25 Karachi locations from Saturday

Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi will set up protest camps at more than 25 locations across the city from Saturday against the levy and alleged extortion tax, Karachi JI chief Munim Zafar said on Friday.

Addressing the media in Karachi, Zafar said protests against the levy and extortion tax were continuing across the country.

“Our demand is that the levy should be abolished,” he said.

Zafar also criticised K-Electric over prolonged power cuts in the city, claiming that some areas were facing up to 18 hours of load-shedding.

“K-Electric has made people’s lives difficult,” he said, accusing the power utility of imposing “collective punishment” on Karachi’s residents.

Zafar said only around 2-3 per cent of consumers were not paying their electricity bills and argued that K-Electric was responsible for taking action against those consumers.

“It is K-Electric’s responsibility to catch them,” he said.

The JI Karachi chief called on the government to end load-shedding in the city.

He said the protest camps would be established at more than 25 locations in Karachi from Saturday as part of the party’s campaign against the levy and extortion tax.
