India has stopped the flow of water from the Jhelum and Neelum rivers after the Chenab, worsening Pakistan’s water situation and raising serious concerns across the country.
Water inflows in several rivers have dropped to dangerously low levels, prompting water experts to term the move a clear violation of the Indus Waters Treaty and call for approaching the international arbitration court.
According to sources, water inflow in the Jhelum and Neelum rivers has fallen to just 3,000 cusecs, whereas it was over 5,000 cusecs four days ago.
Sources further reported that water flow in the Chenab and Jhelum rivers has reached historic lows. The Chenab river was receiving around 10,000 cusecs four days ago, which has now reduced to 5,000 cusecs.
The outflow of water from Head Marala on the Chenab has dropped to zero. Water experts have advised the Indus Water Commission to approach the international arbitration court, stating that blocking river water constitutes a violation of the Indus Waters Treaty.
As a result, canals originating from Qadirabad and Khanki barrages will no longer receive water.
India’s alleged water aggression has raised fears that millions of acres of agricultural land in Punjab could turn barren.
Water experts emphasized that Pakistan must file its case without delay, asserting that India’s water aggression is unacceptable under any circumstances.
