The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that temperatures in Karachi could rise between 39°C and 42°C from June 9 to June 12, prompting authorities to advise residents to take precautionary measures against heat-related illnesses.

According to PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir, the city's humidity level is expected to remain above 50 per cent due to the influence of sea breezes. However, reduced wind speeds may lead to muggy and uncomfortable conditions, causing residents to experience greater heat stress.

The spokesperson said the “feels-like” temperature could be 8°C to 10°C higher than the actual temperature because of the combination of heat and humidity.

The meteorological department warned that excessive sweating during the hot weather could increase the risk of dehydration and urged citizens to remain cautious. Residents have been advised to drink plenty of water, keep their heads covered while outdoors, and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, particularly between 10am and 4pm.

Meanwhile, the PMD spokesperson said El Niño conditions have developed over the Pacific Ocean. He added that it would become clearer within the next two weeks whether the region has fully entered an El Niño phase.
