Renowned actress Yashma Gill expressed her anger and condemned the demolition of the pet market in Lahore, where thousands of pets and birds were reportedly buried alive.
Taking to Instagram, Yashma criticized the Lahore authorities for their negligence, calling it hypocritical that the city, which claims to be a protector of wildlife, allowed such cruelty to happen.
The pet and bird market near Data Darbar shrine was demolished by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) early Wednesday morning. Shopkeepers alleged that the operation was carried out without prior notice, resulting in hundreds of animals being trapped and buried under debris.
Sharing a video on her Instagram, Yashma said, “Even if it was illegal, the animals didn’t have to suffer. Animals are not property, they’re lives.”
She further emphasized, “No matter whatever the law says about a building, it never justifies cruelty. The LDA demolition of the Lahore pet market didn’t just destroy shops, it buried living, breathing souls under concrete and dust. Birds, puppies, rabbits ,all left without a chance.”
Animal rights activists have also condemned the incident. The Tahira Animal Welfare Foundation released a statement saying, “If the market was built illegally, demolish it , t move the tiny lives first. Those cats, dogs, birds, and rabbits were not criminals. They were living, breathing beings who depended on humans for mercy.”
