The deadline for filing annual income tax returns expires today, while the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) says more than 6.8 million citizens have filed their tax returns so far.
The FBR had extended the deadline for filing annual tax returns for the 2025-26 tax year from September 30 to October 15.
Speaking to a private news channel, Pakistan Tax Bar Association Senior Vice President Faraz Fazal said the FBR was required to provide taxpayers with three months to file their income tax returns. He noted that the final tax return form was issued on September 2.
According to FBR sources, the number of income tax returns filed has exceeded 6.8 million. Meanwhile, traders, industrial organisations and tax bar associations have called for a further extension of the filing deadline.
Fazal said the FBR should extend the deadline until December 2, regardless of the number of returns received by October 15, arguing that taxpayers should be given sufficient time to complete the filing process.
