'Injection lagne ke bad shoulders mein dard hua aur tarapna shuru hogaya': Shahzaib’s brother recalls ordeal of losing him

KARACHI: The family of 25-year-old Shahzaib alleged medical negligence by doctors at Fatima Soldier Bazaar Hospital following his death during treatment, and has demanded an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to his brother, Shujaat, Shahzaib was taken to a private hospital in Soldier Bazar after developing diarrhoea, weakness and stomach pain. The family said he was conscious and able to communicate when he arrived at the facility.

Shujaat said doctors initially conducted an ECG after observing an elevated heartbeat. He said the ECG was normal, while subsequent checks showed Shahzaib’s blood pressure at 161 and blood sugar at 50.

According to the family, Shahzaib was subsequently subjected to a series of medical tests. While the family was awaiting the reports, a doctor administered an injection after informing them that his blood sugar was low.

Shujaat alleged that Shahzaib had been in a stable condition before the injection but developed severe pain shortly after it was administered.

“His shoulder began hurting severely, and the pain then moved to the other shoulder,” Shujaat said, adding that Shahzaib subsequently began experiencing severe physical distress, with his hands and legs becoming stiff.

According to his brother, Shahzaib repeatedly told him that he was not feeling well and allegedly said that he had been given the wrong injection.

Shujaat said doctors were called after Shahzaib’s condition deteriorated, but he died within minutes. He alleged that medical staff continued resuscitation efforts for approximately 45 minutes before his death was acknowledged.

The family has also raised questions about the handling of medical evidence following the incident. Shujaat alleged that the waste bin containing discarded medical material had been removed and that he later had to ask hospital staff about Shahzaib’s ECG.

Shujaat also alleged that other cases involving the hospital are pending before the City Court. The claim could not independently establish whether those cases are related to allegations of medical negligence.

The family has demanded accountability and said it intends to pursue legal action over Shahzaib’s death.
