Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, a pivotal figure in numerous post-Cold War conflicts, passed away on Wednesday.

Kissinger, renowned as an astute diplomat, unapologetically advanced US interests globally with his keen intelligence. Born in Germany, his Jewish family sought refuge in the US to escape Nazi persecution.

He breathed his last at his Connecticut home, with a private funeral to be held by his family. A memorial service is planned in New York, where Kissinger grew up.

Survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, as well as two children, Elizabeth and David, from a previous marriage, and five grandchildren, Kissinger leaves behind a complex legacy.

Admired and criticised alike, he unabashedly endorsed either authoritarianism or democracy in the Third World based on circumstances that favoured US interests.

Kissinger aimed to shape an anti-communist world in the post-Cold War era.

In 1969, President Nixon appointed him National Security Adviser, which granted him substantial influence over US foreign policy.

After concluding his government service in 1977, Kissinger maintained a prolific presence as a commentator on public affairs. His counsel was sought by 12 US presidents, from John F. Kennedy to Joe Biden, and by various lawmakers.

During his tenure as both national security adviser and secretary of state from 1969 to 1977, the United States finalised its withdrawal from the Vietnam War, established diplomatic relations with China, and played a pivotal role in brokering a ceasefire in the 1973 Yom Kippur War in the Middle East.

Kissinger’s efforts introduced the concept of shuttle diplomacy.

Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his negotiations to bring an end to the Vietnam War. His North Vietnamese counterpart, Le Duc Tho, declined to accept the prize.

Kissinger's influence extended beyond his years in government, making him a sought-after advisor for presidents and lawmakers alike.

He contributed to shaping public discourse regarding US foreign policy for decades. He has left an indelible mark on the geopolitical landscape.
