Canada’s announcement to recognise the State of Palestine this September sparked strong reactions from the United States and Israel. US President Donald Trump warned that such a move could lead to a breakdown in trade negotiations and potential tariffs on Ottawa.

The diplomatic momentum began when France declared its intention to recognise Palestinian statehood in September. The United Kingdom later indicated it might follow suit if Israel fails to end the siege on Gaza and allow humanitarian aid into the enclave.

Following these developments, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada, too, would recognise the Palestinian state in September.

Reacting to the announcement, Trump posted on Truth Social, "Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh, Canada!!!"

Israel also condemned the decision, calling it a “reward for Hamas.” The Israeli government argued that recognising a Palestinian state at this point would obstruct ongoing ceasefire efforts and jeopardise the release of hostages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he has spent years working to block international recognition of Palestinian statehood and vowed that such recognition will not happen even now.

Meanwhile, Israel’s military siege of Gaza continues, with the humanitarian crisis worsening by the day. Aid convoys remain blocked, and thousands of Palestinians are facing acute hunger. Western nations are increasing pressure on Israel to allow aid trucks into Gaza and to agree to a ceasefire.
