Renowned Palestinian journalist Saleh Al Jafarawi, who was abducted and later killed by an Israel-backed militia in Gaza, had revealed two months before his assassination that he had been receiving death threats. In that interview, he had predicted that he could be martyred next, after the killing of his colleague, Anas Al Sharif.
Al Jafarawi had become one of the most recognised Palestinian voices in the world for his relentless reporting on the Israeli genocide in Gaza. Despite the communication blackout, he was among the few journalists who continued to document the situation on the ground and share it with the world.
News of his death has reignited outrage and grief on social media, similar to the public fury that followed the killings of Anas Al Sharif, Hossam Shabat, and several other Palestinian journalists and prominent figures who were targeted in bombings and shootings by the Israeli occupation.
In an interview with Al Jazeera in August, Al Jafarawi had revealed that Israeli officials and Hebrew-language media outlets had mentioned his name several times, indicating he might be targeted next after his friend Al Sharif’s martyrdom.
“The Israeli occupation is openly threatening me and publishing about me,” he said. “The spokesperson of the Israeli forces, Avichay Adraee, Captain Ella, and others in Hebrew media have mentioned me repeatedly.”

He went on to say, “They have said my name more than once, but in the end, we know that God is one, and you only live once. You either live as they want or live as you choose, with your head held high.”
“We will not kneel before them. I won’t hide from you, Saleh might be the next martyr. We could all face what Anas and other colleagues faced,” he added.
Israel continues to commit some of the gravest war crimes in modern history, with little international intervention to hold it accountable. Al Jafarawi’s killing took place even as the first phase of a ceasefire was underway, with mediators attempting to secure a lasting truce.
Meanwhile, Israel has allowed only a small trickle of humanitarian aid into Gaza and continued to block most supply trucks from entering the enclave.
According to the Gaza Government Media Office, more than 270 journalists have been killed by Israel since the war began in October 2023.
