Naqvi to visit Tehran today for bilateral discussions: Iranian foreign ministry

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday that Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi would travel to Tehran on Sunday, emphasizing that the visit would focus entirely on bilateral matters.

Speaking to Iranian state television’s Khabar network, Baghaei said relations between Iran and Pakistan had strengthened significantly in recent months.

He noted that Tehran’s neighbourhood policy aimed to deepen ties with neighbouring countries by building on shared cultural, historical and other connections.

Addressing reports that Naqvi might deliver a message or proposal from the United States, Baghaei said Iran maintained “very good and growing relations” with Pakistan. He stressed that Naqvi’s visit was intended to address bilateral issues and follow up on understandings and decisions previously reached by the leadership of both countries.

Baghaei added that Pakistan, given its previous role in facilitating dialogue, could use the opportunity to discuss broader regional developments.

However, he said Iran had so far received no indication that Naqvi would carry any specific US message or proposal. He also said that an economic minister from Pakistan could potentially accompany the interior minister.

Regarding recent communication between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Baghaei said the two officials remained in regular contact and continued consultations on regional and bilateral matters.

He further revealed that Araghchi and Dar had agreed to meet during the United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

According to Baghaei, the Iranian delegation was planning several bilateral meetings with officials from different countries alongside its participation in the General Assembly, with discussions expected to cover bilateral relations as well as international and regional developments.

The planned visit comes as Islamabad prepares another high-level diplomatic initiative aimed at easing tensions between Iran and the United States and addressing the worsening conflict involving Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis.

Pakistan’s diplomatic role has become increasingly significant as it seeks to maintain communication between Tehran and Washington while also dealing with its expanding security commitments toward Saudi Arabia.

The intensification of fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has added another layer of complexity to Islamabad’s efforts to navigate the region’s rapidly changing diplomatic and security environment.
