Donald Trump said he would not take part in a potential second round of US-Iran talks, adding that it remains unclear who would represent Washington in the negotiations.

Speaking to The Post, Trump confirmed that further talks between the United States and Iran “could be happening over the next two days” in Islamabad.

Earlier, he had described the ongoing discussions as progressing “a little bit slow” and suggested that a second round of direct negotiations to end the seven-week conflict could take place in Europe. However, he later indicated Islamabad was a more likely venue.

“You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days, and we’re more inclined to go there,” Trump said. “It’s more likely… because the field marshal is doing a great job.”

Trump was referring to Asim Munir, whom he praised for his role in regional stability. “He’s fantastic… and therefore it’s more likely that we go back there,” he added.

On the substance of the talks, Trump reiterated his opposition to Iran possessing nuclear weapons and expressed reservations about reports suggesting Washington had proposed a 20-year suspension of Tehran’s uranium enrichment programme.

“I’ve been saying they can’t have nuclear weapons… so I don’t like the 20 years,” he said, adding that he did not want Iran to feel it had secured a concession.

Meanwhile, retired Pakistani Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed, involved in facilitating the talks, said Tehran had shown “flexibility” on the issue of uranium enrichment, though any agreement would need to be presented domestically as a balanced outcome.

However, Mohammad Marandi, who accompanied the Iranian delegation, rejected the idea of ending enrichment, stating that “a blockade won’t change Iran’s position.”

The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to revive dialogue between Washington and Tehran, with Pakistan emerging as a potential venue for continued negotiations.
