The United States carried out fresh military strikes on Iranian targets on Sunday after Tehran attacked a container ship, while Iran claimed it had again closed the Strait of Hormuz and expanded attacks on US military facilities across the Gulf.

The latest exchange marked a further escalation in the conflict, with President Donald Trump declaring an end to a ceasefire that had been intended to halt hostilities between the US, Israel and Iran. However, he said the door remained open for further negotiations.

Iran said it had closed the Strait of Hormuz after firing a warning shot that struck a vessel travelling on what it described as an unauthorised route. Tehran warned that any retaliation would be met with a "severe response."

The US Central Command disputed the claim, saying commercial vessels continued to transit through the strategic waterway, which previously carried around one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments.

According to the US military, American forces struck 140 Iranian military targets on Saturday, bringing the total number of targets hit during three nights of operations to more than 300. Washington said the strikes were aimed at degrading Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media reported explosions in several port cities following the attacks.
