As Pakistan will marks its 78th Independence Day on August 14, many citizens may not know how news of the country’s freedom from the British Empire — after nearly 200 years of colonial rule — was received around the world.
International newspapers prominently placed the story on their front pages.
When Pakistan was created in 1947, Dawn newspaper declared: “Birth of Pakistan an Event in History”, describing it as one of the major events of the 20th century, when about one-fifth of humanity gained freedom and the process of decolonisation began.
Another front-page item read: “Lord Mountbatten’s Address to Pakistan Constituent Assembly; Colorful Scenes of Splendor at the Secretariat Hall.”
The Indian press also covered the event extensively. Kolkata-based The Statesman headlined:
“Inauguration of Two Dominions.”
The Morning News said:
"Sovereign Pakistan and India Born"
The Tribune Lahore reported:
"India Wakes to Life & Freedom"
The Mail stated:
"Birth of Two Nations"
The Washington Post exclaimed:
"India Achieves Sovereignty Amid Scenes of Wild Rejoicing"
The New York Times announced:
"India and Pakistan Become Nations, Clashes Continue"
The New York World-Telegram summed up:
"Two New Nations Born as British End 200 Years’ Rule"
